Blockchain is a distributed database existing on multiple computers at the same time. It is constantly growing as new sets of recordings, or ‘blocks’, are added to it. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to the previous block, so they form a chain. The database is not managed by any particular body or organization. Instead, everyone in the network gets a copy of the whole database. Old blocks are preserved forever, and new blocks are added to the ledger irreversibly, making it impossible to manipulate by faking documents, transactions and other information.

A stone inscription is called “கல்வெட்டு” (Kal-vettu) in Tamizh. “கல்” (Kal) means stone or rock. “வெட்டு” (Vettu) is to slice or to chisel away. Stone inscriptions were ‘written’ by chiselling the Tamizh script on to stone walls or stone monuments. It is this tradition of preserving history ‘cast in stone’ that led to the word “கல்லேடு” (Kal-lae-du). The first part of this new word is “கல்” (Kal) meaning stone or rock (as described above). The second part of “கல்லேடு” (Kal-lae-du) is from the Tamizh word for ‘ledger’ which is “பேரேடு” (Pae-rae-du). So, in effect, “கல்லேடு” (Kal-lae-du) means “ledger cast in stone” — entries to the ledger are added irreversibly, making it impossible to modify its contents. You can add new content — or new stone inscriptions, but not modify or manipulate what is already cast in stone.
